Health Insurance in America

Health insurance is extremely complicated in the US. The Republicans deem access to health insurance / medical care a privilege.

The Republican stance:

  • Medical coverage for all is unaffordable.
  • Employers shouldn’t be forced to provide medical coverage.
  • Taxes cannot be implemented to pay for medical coverage
  • People shouldn’t have to pay for medical insurance if they don’t need it, much like car insurance.
  • If a person needs medical care, they can go to the emergency room.
  • Defund Medicaid or make people qualify with a job or school if it is funded.
  • Many Medicaid recipients play video games in their parents’ basement.
  • If on Medicaid, get a job.
    • If employed by one of the 49% of private sector businesses in the US however, the likelihood of having affordable health insurance is slim.

Questions:

  • Should a person go broke due to medical bills should they or a family member get sick?
  • Why wouldn’t all employers want their employees to have access to affordable medical care?
    • A healthy stress-free employee is a productive employee
    • Do employers really want to deal with group insurance plans every year?
  • Is a company that doesn’t offer a living wage and benefits really a viable employer?
    • Are these employers really “job creators”?

There is no downside to medical coverage for all.

  • When everyone participates, and everyone must, the average cost decreases.
  • A healthy, secure population is a happy, productive population.

Why, oh why, do the Republicans fight so hard against affordable medical care for all?
